Welcome to the Safety Positive Summit, the first conference dedicated exclusively to personal safety for the blind community, organized by and for the blind community. This groundbreaking event aims to build bridges of communication between the blind and sighted worlds, fostering a safer tomorrow for everyone.

At the Safety Positive Summit, we recognize that discussions about safety need to be tailored to address the unique challenges faced by individuals who are blind, visually impaired, low vision, or disabled. Our sessions are thoughtfully crafted to tackle the critical conversations that matter most within the blind community, ensuring that all voices are heard and respected.

We invite everyone—whether you are blind, visually impaired, low vision, disabled, or sighted—to join us in this educational experience. Together, we will explore vital topics, share resources, and empower each other with knowledge that enhances personal safety and promotes understanding across communities.

Agenda

This two day virtual event is bringing you many choices for how you can become safer in your everyday lives as blind individuals and those that serve the blind. We are working to build bridges of communication to enhance safety and we do this with a fun rainbow color theme. Navigate through the 1st Safety Positive Summit and add more choices to your personal safety tool belt.

  • Meaning: Red symbolizes bravery and the courage to stand up for oneself and others. In the context of personal safety, it encourages individuals to assert their rights and seek help when needed.

Representation: Resilience

  • Meaning: Orange embodies resilience and the ability to bounce back from challenges. It reminds the community that setbacks can be overcome and that it’s essential to stay strong in the face of adversity.

  • The community that cares- how our community decided to support one another in our new Crew of Care program.
  • How are we surviving?- let’s discuss resources for those who are survivors of abuse and neglect. Discover some solutions and resources for our survivors.

 

8:30pm Yellow

Representation: Awareness

  • Meaning: Yellow signifies awareness and vigilance. It encourages individuals to stay alert to their surroundings and recognize potential safety risks, fostering a proactive approach to personal safety.

  • What is being proactive about your safety?- how can we go from reactive to proactive about our personal safety.
  • Transportation safety- navigate with us on how you can be safety positive, weather on a plane, train, automobile or even ships.
  • Weather safety and how to be prepared- what do you need to have prepared in an event a weather disaster tries to mess up your life.

  • Meaning: Green represents growth and healing. It highlights the importance of personal development and learning from experiences, both positive and negative, to enhance one’s safety and well-being.

Representation: Trust

  • Meaning: Blue symbolizes trust and reliability. This color encourages individuals to build trustworthy relationships within their community, fostering a safe environment where everyone feels supported.

Representation: Intuition

  • Meaning: Indigo is associated with intuition and inner wisdom. It empowers individuals to listen to their instincts when assessing situations, reinforcing the importance of trusting one’s gut feelings for personal safety.
  • Mental health topics
  • Coping strategies for anxiety- since on average 1 out of 4 blind people struggle with anxiety we are going to share some coping strategies.
  • Resources for mental health- what resources are available if and when you are struggling with your mental health.

4pm Violet

Representation: Unity

  • – Meaning: Violet embodies unity and collaboration. It serves as a reminder that working together as a community enhances safety for all. It encourages inclusivity and support
  • among individuals, regardless of their backgrounds or experiences.

Registration

Donation: We encourage a donation of $10 to support the Safety Positive Foundation, but it is not required. Those who donate will receive access to the recordings of all sessions after the event.
