Aspiration Statement

To be the premier safety institution for the blind community, offering comprehensive and robust services to anyone on the blindness spectrum.

The above information highlights our core truths that inform everything we create for those we serve.

We like to say we are the organization that works hard and plays always. Our team spends countless hours developing programs, teaching training, and having serious conversations about personal safety within the blind community. Yet, amidst all this hard work, we believe it’s essential to infuse joy into our efforts—after all, laughter is a vital ingredient in maintaining resilience!

You will often hear us say there is a method to our madness here at Safety Positive Foundation. Now let’s share what we mean by that.

When you attend any event where our founder is present, you will always find her wearing an interesting top hat.  Many ask why.

Amy has worn this top hat since the first day of launching Safety Positive Foundation. This whimsical accessory represents her passion for offering choices for personal safety within the blind community.

Why the Tea?

Before launching Safety Positive Foundation, our founder explored the traditions of samurai warriors, who held tea ceremonies to engage in philosophical discussions on various topics. This inspired our weekly “Teatime” events, where we foster open dialogue about safety, mental health, and community support. If they can have discussions around tea, why not the blind community? After all, holding space for these conversations is vital for safety and de-escalating fears—plus, there are numerous health benefits to enjoying tea!

In promoting our Teatime weekly events, we decided to hand out tea so attendees can sip and chat while fostering connections.

What is with the Pirate Theme?

The Safety Positive Foundation holds a deep belief in listening to our community. What started as a side comment about being pirates transformed into a rallying point for our community. We embrace the adventurous spirit of pirates—celebrating freedom, authenticity, and the joy of life while ensuring that everyone has a supportive crew to navigate their journeys.

We feel deeply honored that not only do our students feel safe with our volunteers, but they also support one another whenever a need arises. The Safety Positive crew is dedicated to uplifting our community and beyond regarding safety and mental health.

Why the Ducks?

Thanks to our fellow pirates, ducks have become much more than just a part of our training in Verbal Craft. In this training, we emphasize how ducks represent being calm in the storm. Beneath the surface, their paddling can be frantic, yet they maintain a smooth appearance on the water.

Our community of pirates uses “duck” and other related terms to encourage one another to speak up when they need support, reminding each other that they are “quackers” for safety.

In all this “muchness”—this delightful “extra”—we aim to bring more awareness about safety and mental health within the blind community while having fun. After all, we are the Safety Positive Foundation, and positivity is in our name!

When you attend an event we host, you can expect free swag bags filled with tea, a duck, and our contact information—all conveniently packed to fit in your pocket. As we grow as an organization, we are excited to introduce more playful elements, including fun hats and engaging activities alongside our trainings, resources, and support for our blind community.

We always welcome feedback from those with questions, comments, concerns, or emotional outbursts about everything we do. After all, we are in the business of serving you—our treasured blind community.

Together, we can grow as a community for a safer tomorrow for ALL!
